Title: Spitalfields Market

Location: London, UK

Description: Spitalfields Market is one of London’s historic market halls which, since the fruit and vegetable trade market vacated over a decade ago, developed into a somewhat ramshackle re-use as an eclectic consumer market, on Thursday, Fridays and Sundays. For much of the rest of the week however, the market hall was under-used, particularly in the evening.

Developer Ballymore appointed Jestico + Whiles and Julian Harrap Architects in a joint commission to restore and refurbish the market.

The joint commission includes a complete restoration of the Victorian market hall, incorporating a dramatic new lighting and colour scheme; the completion and alteration of contemporary pavilion structures within the market for a variety of retail and restaurant uses; a complete re-lay of the market hall floor incorporating a flexible service provision; new basement storage facilities will allow market stalls to be quickly removed and stored; allowing the space to be used for a variety of cultural activities and events; restoration of the historic fabric and installation of new shop fronts on the outside of the Horner Buildings.
