Demolition starts on British Council, Colombo
28.06.12

The British Council in Sri Lanka has commenced work on a multi-phased project to extend and refurbish its existing facilities in Colombo. Designed by Jestico + Whiles in collaboration with Design Forum locally, the proposals reorganise the facilities across the site, creating a new Library, Multipurpose Hall and Customer Services building linked to an existing colonial villa in the centre of the site, which will be refurbished to provide flexible office space. The site contains a variety of buildings of differing ages and styles. The Villa dominates the compound, is centrally placed with a large covered veranda and is larger than any of the surrounding buildings. The design for the new buildings unifies the site by working within the palette of materials present.
