Named after the founder of the Open University, this innovative low energy building was designed to encourage an open, flexible and comfortable working environment for up to 350 staff and students. The building has central facilities and a support hub with flexible, adaptable and column free workspaces. Elevations consist of white render, Cor Ten steel and well proportioned curtain-walling. Circulation spaces are elegantly viewed through horizontal timber cladding made with European Oak. Slender, external columns frame the corners of the building. The design of the building exceeded the briefing requirements and the building was awarded an 'Excellent' rating of nearly 80 per cent under BREEAM, one of its highest scoring assessments ever made.
