The design of Malmaison, Oxford consists of the complete refurbishment of Grade I, II and II* listed buildings and a new extension to form a spectacular hotel with 86 bedrooms, apartments, retail and leisure facilities. The hotel boasts a rich and remarkable history, witnessing nine centuries of development, first as a royal castle, a court and latterly as a prison. The practice was appointed as the interior architects in collaboration with the lead architects Dixon Jones. A successful balance has been achieved between the preservation of the historic façade and the innovative and characteristic contemporary design features of the existing building. Original features such as walkways, balconies, stairs and original brickwork walls have been carefully retained which contrast with the luxurious, modern style of the new interiors.
