Georgian Embassy

Jestico + Whiles were finalists in the invited competition to design a new British Embassy and Ambassador’s Residence in T’bilisi, Georgia. The design concept explores the hierarchies of public and private space and the notions of sovereignty and contextualism. The interweaving of international communication is expressed through a layering of British concepts over a specific Georgian topography, resulting in a tapestry of hierarchies of space against the background of the terraced hillside. Architecture and landscape work together to provide an inspirational development of the site. The public and private functions of the building are mirrored by distinct landscape areas devoted to public exhibition, formal arrival, staff relaxation and private residential needs. British landscape traditions are tailored to the specific Georgian site.
