Alston Bar & Beef, Glasgow / Jestico Whiles

Located in the atmospheric vaults below Glasgow Central Station, Alston Bar & Beef is an 80-cover restaurant named after Alston Street. This was the main thoroughfare of Glasgow’s mysterious, forgotten Grahamston Village which was built over in the 1800s to create the station.

Our design draws upon the station’s rugged history and the rich historic layers of the wider context of Scotland, whilst adding contemporary elements to create a calming retreat full of oblique references and layers of interest.

The restaurant, specialising in prime Scottish steak produced locally alongside other produce, is complemented by a bar displaying fine and specialist gins. Materials and finishes have therefore been chosen to bring together the blend of local cuisine and gin selection.

The design signifies the timeless beauty of craftsmanship and impeccable detailing; a juxtaposition between the old and the new, where history merges with contemporary style presenting a stirring new spatial experience.
