Jestico + Whiles' volunteers help children design and construct Matt + Fiona's largest build yet

19.07.2019

We're proud to be supporting architectural educationalists Matt + Fiona on this innovative Mega Maker Lab project by the Institute of Imagination that will see Primary school children transform a former fire-engine-fixing hall in South London into a hub of creativity.

The Mega Maker Lab includes a performance zone, challenge and play area, an idea lab and a test area. The form and fabrication of these areas came directly from earlier design workshops with children that some of our architects and architectural assistants took part in, back in April. The idea was instigated by Matt + Fiona and the Institute of Imagination, a charity that champions imagination to foster innovation, to develop skills for the future and to support well-being. Tool and making hubs enable the young designers to use real-life techniques to gain an understanding of robotics and inventive fabrication.

The colourful lab has been built over the period of a week in July and will be open for the public to explore, make and test throughout the whole of August, Tuesdays-Sundays 10am-5pm. The experience is for families and groups with children aged 5-12 years. Full details can be found here.

“Jestico + Whiles is hugely excited to be involved in supporting MATT + FIONA and the Institute of Imagination in this ambitious build. The project offers a great opportunity for our employees to gain hands on experience of designing and making alongside the free-thinking minds of the children involved, and to directly support MATT + FIONA’S excellent architectural education initiative. It’s really inspiring to be involved and we greatly look forward to seeing the end results of this exiting collaboration" - Alex Gordon, Associate Director.
