Jestico + Whiles are renovating and extending 51-63 Ridley Road in Dalston into a sustainable mixed use development to provide a high quality living, working and leisure environment.
Proposals seek to upgrade the current retail and office facilities of Ridley Road Shopping Village and Ridley Road Market, with a scheme that offers an opportunity to reinvigorate the key local building, creating a space that will greatly contribute to the ongoing regeneration of the market and the wider area.
The design proposes to fully re-clad and extend the existing brick building, with an additional storey replacing the flat parapet with a pitched ‘crown’ roof that will draw attention to the skyline.
The extension is set back on all four sides to reduce the impact at street level, whilst also providing external terrace and amenity space to residences.
The refurbished building employs a simple material palette of London stock brick from ground to second floor, zinc cladding to the extension and horizontal slabs of pre-cast concrete panels between the brick piers, further complemented by the use of anodised metal balustrades and natural ventilation panels. The materials selected are deliberately robust, in response to both the surrounding context and the use of the street as a working market.
