Australian Institute for Nanoscience / Jestico Whiles

Jestico + Whiles beat a prestigious international field of university and research building specialists to win the competitive tender for this £45m world-leading nanotechnology research and teaching facility for the University of Sydney.

Working with the head of school and the various research groups, we played a key role in the development of a comprehensive technical brief for the facility. This involved careful balancing of user requirements against project budget.

Stringent environmental performance criteria in terms of vibration, electromagnetic interference, temperature, humidity and air purity were required in the cleanrooms, laboratories and TEM suite. Teaching facilities had to meet onerous acoustic criteria and complex audio visual requirements. The sloping site was highly constrained by the surrounding buildings, protected trees and height restrictions imposed by urban planning requirements.
