Axe Street / Jestico Whiles

Comprising 96 affordable apartments in a mix of dwelling sizes and tenures, Axe Street is a sophisticated new residential development and an integral part of the wider regeneration of Barking Town Centre.

The exemplary design is characterised by the bold façade, which dramatically changes in scale from the three-storey brick building of Axe Street to the contemporary six-storey copper building overlooking the busier St Paul’s Road. All apartments are situated around open ground floor courtyards and roof terraces, which are accessible to all residents.

External materials are refined and well considered, consisting of brick, glass and copper.

The reveals of recessed balconies and terraces are finished in varying colours, which enliven the façade and wider street scene.

Solar thermal panels on the roof generate energy for the development and living roof areas have been planted to reduce surface water run-off and to encourage bio-diversity.

The development achieved an EcoHomes rating of 'Very Good' and the apartments met Lifetime Homes standards.
