Camden Gardens is an award winning, sustainable, social housing development. The simple, high quality design provides 27 affordable apartments, houses and maisonettes, some of which are designed for special needs. The design has successfully rationalised a complex range of challenging and irregular site issues, including an existing underground railway, an overhead railway viaduct, a canal, a right of way running through the middle of the site, a storm relief sewer, and three listed trees.
High standards of energy efficiency and air tightness were achieved with durable, easily maintained finishes and components that reduce maintenance and minimise cost. The layout of the living rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms has been carefully designed to ensure the optimum comfortable living conditions and good acoustic separation between dwellings. The design of the apartments and houses exceed minimum space standards and the robust and attractive circulation spaces encourage a strong sense of community. The majority of balconies overlook the canal, all ground floor apartments have private garden space and all living rooms face south, providing optimum daylight and sunlight.
