The design for the prestigious Fortnum & Mason department store in Piccadilly consists of the refurbishment of 62,000 sq ft of retail space over six floors and five new restaurants. One of the main challenges was improving the visual connection between the trading floors, as well as improving vertical circulation by encouraging shoppers onto the upper floors.

After extensive analysis of the historic building it was proposed to form a new four storey atrium in the centre of the store, crowned by a new rooflight and a grand helical staircase, which allows natural light to penetrate deep into the centre of the building. The fusion of calm, contemporary insertions unites the previously disparate trading floors and departments.
