New Union Wharf occupies a stunning riverside site on the Isle of Dogs, opposite the O2 Arena. East Thames proposed to regenerate this estate, replacing its 189 social rent homes with 400 new dwellings for rent, shared ownership and private sale.
Jestico + Whiles submitted a planning application for a street-based design that unlocked the potential of the site’s unique setting, following extensive consultation with residents.
A strong neighbourhood has developed despite the unpromising physical environment where under croft car parking, numerous level changes and unresolved pockets create a confusion of spaces between buildings.
Our design proposals simplify the arrangement of buildings and spaces between to create an easily understood pattern of terraces, blocks, streets and landscaped open spaces with most new homes enjoying views across the Thames.
