Client Oasis Community Learning
Location Southampton, UK
Oasis Academy: Mayfield in Southampton specialises in Global Communications and caters for 900 students aged 11-16 sponsored by Oasis Academy Trust.
The new building is designed around a central 'agora', or meeting place, which is a key part of all Oasis Academies; a multi-functional space conceived as the heart of the school. In the Mayfield design, the agora is a dramatic triple-height space connecting all six learning areas which are arranged on either side.
The performance hall, dining and learning resource areas also open off the agora and can be combined to create an enormous central space for whole school gatherings, events, performances and exhibitions.
Each of the learning areas has been designed to be flexible but also practical, with a range of sizes of space, and some spaces which are capable of being opened up to others to allow for a variety of teaching and learning styles.
The building has also been carefully designed to facilitate widescale community use, and has areas which can be used by the community whilst the academy is in operation.
The building has been designed with a mixed-mode ventilation system which means that natural ventilation through the façade is induced through the building using low-velocity fans to ensure ventilation is consistent and controlled throughout the year.
