Spitalfields Market / Jestico Whiles

Spitalfields Market is a former fruit and vegetable market and one of London’s historic market halls, which has developed into an eclectic consumer market, particularly popular on Sundays.

Jestico + Whiles in collaboration with historic buildings specialists Julian Harrap Architects were commissioned to provide new, high quality café, restaurant and retail space under the historic Victorian roof structure. The refurbishment reinvigorated the market as a destination, and enabled the market hall to be put to a variety of uses alongside its ongoing use as a characterful retail market.

The new retail and restaurant units are carefully detailed with floor-to-ceiling glazing, metal balustrades and timber handrails. Dramatic lighting sculptures and installations divide the interior environment and complement the elegant uplighters and pendant lights that accentuate the historic roof structure and market stalls.

The space can be used for a variety of cultural activities and events and a new basement storage facility allows stalls to be quickly removed and stored for special events. The commission also included the redesign of the external shop fronts and external pavement works.
