The House for the Future / Jestico Whiles

The House for the Future is an award-winning, exemplar low energy and sustainable house, and provides a model for high quality housing.

Jestico + Whiles won the commission as part of an open architectural competition, organised by The National Museums and Galleries of Wales and BBC Wales.

The design approach combined best practice design ideas and technology with innovative systems. The modular layout was designed to be adapted over time to suit changing lifestyles and circumstances, and to reflect the standard of housing in the year 2050.

The house responds to the climate and the availability of materials in Wales, but is capable of reproduction and repetition in many different configurations and locations. All systems in the house are low maintenance, and the internal comfort and environment of the house is a key priority. The structure of the house consists of locally grown post and beam oak timber frames.

The house was designed to make no net contribution to CO2 emissions. The highly efficient heating is supplied by a ground source heat pump and a wood pellet heater.
