Jestico + Whiles have designed a new sustainable hotel resort on the archipelago of Zanzibar following an international design competition. The project combines global design flair with local materials, expertise and craftsmanship.
The Zuri Hotel & Resort is a self-contained village with 60 individual cabanas and five larger villas, together with restaurants, bars, yoga, meditation spaces and massage cabanas.
Our design responds to Zanzibar’s culture, climate and geography through the use of locally available materials, the organisation of spaces and strong references to the island’s heritage and craftsmanship.
In response to the client’s brief, the proposal is both ecologically and socially responsive, offering high quality accommodation that responds to the local context. Zuri Zanzibar is the first hotel in the world to be Awarded EarthCheck’s Prestigious Sustainable Design Gold Certification.
Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck stated, “This award highlights the long-term commitment that Zuri Zanzibar has shown to the communities and environment of Zanzibar and has allowed the resort to take practical, meaningful action to provide a quality holiday experience for their guests. We look forward to continuing to support their environmental efforts for years to come.”
