The new Cavendish Laboratory will replace existing facilities for the Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge. The Cavendish is one of the most renowned physics laboratories in the world, begun in 1874 and home to 30 Nobel Laureates.
The new Cavendish will house over 15 research groups in both theoretical and experimental physics, and provide advanced research facilities including clean rooms, cryostat halls, microscopy suites, and laser and optical labs.
There will also be extensive teaching and learning spaces, including a 400-seat lecture theatre, teaching labs for undergraduates, learning resource centre, outreach and exhibition spaces, tea room and other collaborative working areas for researchers and students.
Our proposals for the new facility will support the ground-breaking research into physics and cognate sciences that has been taking place at Cambridge for over 140 years and will contribute to the university's wider development for West Cambridge.
The 33,000m² building is
expected to complete in 2022 and is the first of two projects the practice is carrying out for the
university on its West Cambridge campus. It will be named the Ray Dolby Centre,
in recognition of a £75 million gift from the estate of sound pioneer Ray
Dolby.
